Dryer Not Heating? Check Airflow First

A dryer that tumbles but will not heat is usually an airflow or heating-part fault, and airflow is the place to start.

Clean the lint filter, then the vent

Clean the filter after every load. Then check the vent hose for crushing and the outside vent for lint and blockages. Poor airflow trips thermal fuses and doubles drying time.

Heating parts, in order

After airflow, we test the heating element, thermal fuses, and thermostats with a meter. A blown fuse is often a symptom, so we find why it blew, not just replace it.

Safety notes that matter

Stop a dryer that smells hot, and do not run it overnight or while you are out if it is faulty. Lint buildup is a real fire risk, and it is also the easiest fault to prevent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does it take two cycles to dry?

Almost always airflow: a full filter, a crushed hose, or a blocked outside vent. Fix that first.

Gas or electric?

Gas dryers have ignitors and gas valves. Electric dryers have elements. The diagnosis is different, so tell us which you have.

Can I clean the vent myself?

You can clean the filter and check the outside vent. A full internal vent cleaning is a tech job.

Is a burning smell an emergency?

Stop the dryer and unplug it. If the smell is strong or there is smoke, treat it as urgent and call.
