Repair or Replace Your Appliance
The repair-versus-replace question is really three questions: how old is it, what failed, and what will the next fault cost?

Age first
Under about 10 years with one failed part, repair usually wins. Over 12 years with repeated faults, replacement usually wins. Between those ages, the failed part decides.
The part matters more than the brand
A pump, element, fan, or switch is usually a clear repair. A sealed-system fault, a control board on a very old unit, or a tub bearing fault can cost a large fraction of a new appliance.
Count the whole cost, not just the repair bill
Add energy use, the chance of another fault soon, and the disruption of being without the appliance. A cheap repair that fails again in months is not cheap. Our cost guide walks through these factors, and on a visit we give you both options with honest math.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a simple rule?
Yes, as a starting point: if the repair costs a large fraction of a new appliance and the unit is 12-plus years old, replace it. Otherwise, repair usually wins.
Does energy use change the answer?
Yes, for fridges and washers especially. An old fridge can use far more electricity than a new one, so replacement can pay back over time.
What if only one part failed on an old unit?
A single cheap part can still be worth it, even on an older unit, if the rest of the machine is healthy. We test before recommending.
Can you give me both prices on the visit?
Yes. We quote the repair upfront, and we lay out replacement as the honest alternative where it makes sense, with no pressure.
