Where the smell comes from
Front-loader door seals trap water and detergent residue. Top loaders can smell too, usually from a dirty tub or a drain hose that holds water. The smell is rarely the clothes themselves.
What actually helps
Run a hot empty cycle with the right cleaner for your model, wipe the door seal dry after washes, and leave the door ajar between loads so the tub dries. Use the detergent dose the maker suggests, not more.
When it is a fault, not just buildup
If the smell persists after cleaning, or water stays in the tub, the drain pump, filter, or hose may be blocked. That is a repair visit, not another cleaning cycle.
